The Rogue Ex-Priest of Armidale

There's a big difference between a "lovable rogue" and a "rogue". This is often overlooked.

A lovable rogue is a character who, often from humble beginnings, manages to beat the system using extraordinary and unconventional means. Although he at first seems to act for personal profit alone, the lovable rogue can win over an audience with charm and wit, eventually revealing some ethical motivation that was not immediately apparent. He is not condemned as a villain, but celebrated as being adventurous, individual and creative.

Not so the plain old "rogue"!

Some of the perhaps less-used-these-days definitions of a "rogue" include:

1   an unprincipled, deceitful, and unreliable person; a scoundrel or rascal;
2   a vicious and solitary animal that has separated itself from its herd;
3   an organism that shows an undesirable variation from a standard.

Where would we find such a person? Such an out-and-out, old-fashioned rogue?

Well, through his many contacts around the world, Court Dude can reveal that there's a real live one living right now in Armidale, northern NSW who goes by the name of John Farrell.

Farrell case:

 Rev. John Joseph Farrell

(1953-) was ordained at the Armidale cathedral on 21 September 1981. His main parish placements were: St Edward's parish, Tamworth South (as a deacon, early 1981); St Francis Xavier parish, Moree (1981 to mid-1984); and St Nicholas’s parish, Tamworth (1985-87). In 1987-88 he lived at the residence of Armidale Bishop Henry Kennedy. In 1989 he was transferred, on loan, to the Diocese of Parramatta, where his parishes were: St Madeleine’s, Kenthurst (until November 1990); and St Margaret Mary’s, Merrylands (until 1 July 1992). He had no subsequent parish appointments. He was accused of sexual abuse and the diocese made civil settlements with two former altar boys. One former altar boy, who was offered $175,000, was from the Moree parish in the Armidale diocese (in northern NSW) and the other was from the Merrylands parish in the Parramatta diocese (west of Sydney). The settlements were made in 1998 and 2005.

Last night, as it happens, there was an excellent piece of investigative journalism on the ABC's Four Corners program about a rogue ex-priest from Armidale who according to Court Dude's contacts on the ground there bears a striking resemblance to Good Old Father John  - see  http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2012/06/28/3535079.htm?WT.svl=bestOfScroller

The story reveals, amongst other horrific collateral damage to family and friends, that both of the former altar boys mentioned above later committed suicide.

Although no longer practising as a priest, John Farrell swans about Armidale these days as a bona-fide man-about-town, writing articles for the local paper and promoting himself a close student of local history. Specifically, local Catholic history.

But why hassle Good Old Father John if he's never been convicted?  The presumption of innocence  is paramount - isn't it? Yes, it is. Are there ever, ever, exceptions to this Golden Rule of Justice?  Yes, there are. When men, to whom you entrust the care of your children, rape them and get away with it.

John Farrell is a rogue. An "unprincipled, deceitful, and unreliable person"; a "solitary animal who has separated himself (in this case, morally) from the herd"; an organism who has shown a most "undesirable variation from a standard".

It is sometimes the case that a crime can resonate so deeply and tragically that it actually works itself to make a legal conviction extremely difficult. And that is what has happened here. Will justice ever be visited upon the Rogue Ex-Priest of Armidale? Stay tuned...

    2. Thanks for educating us with that great article. The Four Corners episode was the most confronting piece of television I have ever watched. To find out this monster lives in the same town as me is well, unthinkable. The other concerning fact is that he is part of the Lions Club Armidale (which was stated on Four Corners) My question, from a legal perspective is why does the church continue to get away with this? How can we implement change?? Also why did that initial Judge let him walk??

    3. Ellie, check the 'john ellis vs george pell' case.
Not the whole story but explains why victims can't get satisfaction.
the 'catholic church does not exist as a legal entity in Aus'

      and therefore cannot be sued!
      true dinks!

    4. Dear Ellie, it seems to me that the Church are very successful in covering these cases up because the priests cover for each other - even if they know it is against the law to do so. This is nothing less than a criminal conspiracy to pervert the cause of justice, and it shoudl be treated that way. These priests obviously regard "God's Law" as more important than laws that protect our children from rapists. This was on show last night as Cardinal Pell said he would "take the word of 3 priests" over the transcript of the actual words spoken in a court case! He just refused to believe it because to do so would implicate his good buddies.

Historically, there has often been serious conflict between the Church and the secular state concerning legal issues. I think it's about time we showed them who is REALLY in charge...

    5. A little birdie tells me that said Narrabri magistrate was a long-time associate of Farrell. If true, and that should be able to be ascertained, then surely said magistrate should have disqualified himself from hearing the case, and this would make an equally damning story in itself about the operations of the so-called justice system in that region of NSW.

    6. your right the magistrate and Fr F were known to each other and it is my understanding that the matter was refereed to ICAC but that was the end of it I'm afraid!

Also, lets not forget that those three Catholic clergy who investigated the case and subsequently became aware of Father F's sexual abuse covered it up and consequently allowed this monster to molest and rape other children! they should be held accountable as well!

    7. Peter, thanks for the confirmation.

If Blissett was indeed referred to ICAC then I think many of us would like to read its report. I wonder if anybody here can confirm the ICAC referral?

And I think those "Three Amigos" are going to find themselves up before some sort of public hearing sooner than later. This has now become too big for Pell and Co to handle, and I think that more victims will be encouraged to come forward now. Nobody with half a brain is going to accept any internal investigation that Pell and Co instigates. Priests investigating priests is now a very bad joke.

I hope that sufficient public pressure is brought to bear on the government that it is forded to have a Royal Commission convened into the cover-up of sexual abuse by churches.

    8. When I heard of an investigation concerning a certain priest I immediately thought on Father Farrell, a priest I met in Armidale who truly wished to "know" me.

I met Father John Farell at UNE - he was an external student studying philosophy. I was interested in all religions and any profound philosophy so I was facinated that a Catholic Priest was a co student. I said I wouldnt mind having a good discussion with him on Catholism and he told me he actually came from Armidale. Eventually he invited me to his parents home for lunch. While I wanted to discuss the beauty of existance our discussion unfortunately moved to how he used to shoot sparrows at the church. I discussed how opposite I thought this was to any deep religiouos teaching and christianity. His reply on just that matter was cold and non compassionate as was his discussion on his giving last rights to the dead. Next he said lunch would be a little while and he wished to kiss me in the shed while his elder parents were upstairs making lunch. I told him I really really had only wished to discuss catholism with him and that also as a priest he really shouldnt be asking (I also pointed out I found it rather unkind to his parents upstairs). I put him off and we went upstairs to not only have lunch but be bored with a viewing of the recording of his sunday night five minute religious talk (each christian religion took turns to provide a priest or minister to give a five minute religious message I think on the abc late on Sunday nights). His parents dutifully watched with great enthusiasm and he, John Farrell, made comments something to the concept of how good he was(I think he also made comparisons with others who did the five minute message saying how much better he was). The five minute message of Father Farrells was was spoken without spirit, it came across as ingenuine, I think I recall there was a reek of non compassionate pomposity and otherwise it was so boring I almost wanted to run out of the house. Unfortunately my attempts to understand catholism from catholic priest always had a hitch but John Farrell was indeed, (in my opinion) sleesy and I think without concience.

  3. I wonder if the Mr. Pell, who is a senior member of the Lions Club in Armidale, is a relation to Cardinal Pell of Sydney.? Just a thought, not an accusation.
I wonder where John Farrell is today. ? Maybe a quick trip overseas i would have thought.
The case in Moree against him was in the local moree court. I'm not saying he was guilty, but it seems strange that the Catholic Church send a Queens Council lawyer to a small local court hearing in a rural town out west. A bit like sending jesus to mow your lawn.

  6. Hi Dude,

Quick clarification. Father F wasn't tried in Moree, but Narrabri as that's where he took Damian Jurd to assist him as an alter boy. Father F was defended by Australia's then preeminent QC, Chester Porter. This morning Brian Lucas, one of the priests at the infamous meeting where FF's illegal activities were discussed, made a call for all victims to go to the police. Nice sentiment, but rather duplicitous given the Church paid Chester Porter to destroy Damian. It is a great sadness that they succeeded.

    1. Hi Alex,

So the priest who helped cover up the crimes and helped keep this monster free to commit more crimes now wants tohelp by suggesting the victims go to the police...not just duplicitous, I would suggest, but an absolute insult to the victimsthemselves.

What Brian Lucas should do is go down to Armidale Police Station and hand himself in for being a part of a criminal conspiracy to conceal crimes committed by child rapists who were under his direct control. Perhaps someone could suggest this to him? Give me his contact details and I will...

  7. well, it's all still humming up here in Armidale. Thanks for the clarifications and such. Armidale is a town of about 21,000 people, so a lot of us know this guy. Many people are just so angry that his history wasn't known to us. Having a self-proclaimed child abuser among us is very disturbing, considering the fact that he is/was a prominent member of the Lions Club, which frequently run activities for kids up here. The local paper has pronounced that he was never a member of their editorial staff, but simply a person who wrote the occasional article, and that his services were dispensed with after the knowledge of his past was made known.

    3. Hi Phronima

I was working on the front desk for an Armidale based newspaper and I can confirm that he was a prolific writer who's articles were used to fill space in both the local newspapers. He was never paid for these submissions by the company that I worked for and it is my understanding the The Armidale Express also accepted his written contributions without making payments to him as an author or reporter.

  8. Thanks Palerider,

Since the late nineties the Express has known about FF. At least two people have warned the Independent in the last year. The answer was generally that he was found not guilty, and that nothing could be done. Wrong on both counts.

  9. You are a bit late Court Dude. I informed Four COrners & other media people of the identity of Father F long ago as did Broken Rites. Everyone knew his identity but the court documents were 'sealed' and there was a threat of contempt over whoever spilt his name to the public. Not sure why everyone was so afraid of these teethless court rulings.
By the way, I have two comments:
    1) Why is the magistrate (judge) who dismissed the case not being attacked by all concerned? He is as guilty as the church officials who hid the evidence of Farrell's guilty past?
    2) There are more than Farrell being concealed by the church. There are many more who have escaped conviction becos the church gives shut-up money to victims which they call compensation which comes with strings attached (confidentiality agreement not to divulge details nor prosecute).
It is a shocking betrayal of the trust of the Catholic people and the community at large!

    1. The magistrate's name in the Narrabri case was Ray Blissett. The judgement makes for shocking reading. Such a judgement would never be made today.

    2. Better late than never, Kevin...

With respect to the Narrabri case: Magistrates, unless prevented by statute, have discretion to interpret the evidence as they see fit. If the judgment is so obviously biased and wrong, as it was here, it should be appealed to a higher court by the prosecution. In cases such as these, however, the victim is often so traumatised they don't want to continue, and/or the prosecution don't want to or can't throw any more resources at it. Further, issues relating to the credit of the witnesses (which were pivotal in the Narrabri case) cannot usually be revisited on appeal because the witnesses do not give evidence again - the appeal judges look at the transcript of what happened the first time and they only have the original magistrate's opinion of the evidence to go by. So, overall, once an abuse case is dismissed it is very, very difficult to get it back up and running. That is one reason, it seems, why the Church would hire one of the best QC's the country has ever seen (Chester Porter) to go to the humble surrounds of Narrabri Local Court to represent one of their own - they know that if they win the first battle, they usually win the war. Strange to think of a bunch of priests at war with their own flock, eh? But that's what it is...and like most wars, it has fatalities...

Personally, I think charges of criminal conspiracy and conspiracy to pervert the cause of justice can and should be brought against church leaders who (very obviously!) actively conspire together to conceal these crimes. This would be an effective way of making future cover-ups less likely. Will it ever happen? That is, in large part, up to us...

  13. From the Telegraph Online:

Derryn Hinch names alleged sex abuse priest

"Hinch - who was recently released from home detention for breaching suppression orders to name two sex offenders - revealed the identity of the man, known as "Father F", on Victorian Fairfax radio station 3AW.

"Father F" was the subject of a Four Corners report alleging the Catholic Church had been involved in the cover-up of sexual abuse.

Fairfax Radio cut its online feed at 4pm (AEST) for legal reasons.

Hinch gave some details of the man's NSW address and work.

"He's still living a good life untouched by the law in spite of his crimes," Hinch said.

  14. From ABC News online ...

Former judge to investigate 'Father F' abuse case

Former Federal Court judge Antony Whitlam QC has been appointed to conduct an independent inquiry into the way child abuse allegations were dealt with in two New South Wales Catholic dioceses.

The allegations revolve around a New South Wales priest, Father F, who allegedly abused a number of altar boys in the 1980s.

Four Corners recently revealed the accused priest made admissions to three senior priests about his actions, but they never referred the matter to police.

In a joint statement, the Bishop of Armidale Michael Kennedy and the Bishop of Parramatta Anthony Fisher say the inquiry will look at the processes around Father F.

The statement says the inquiry does not replace any investigations being done by police or other authorities.

Farrell has been arrested today and "police are planning to charge him with child sex offences allegedly committed against three girls in the 1970s and '80s."

  17. Further details from ABC Online:

Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec told a news conference that Father F will be charged with 25 offences relating to three girls in the 1970s and 1980s.

He said the charges include indecent assault and sexual intercourse without consent.

Detective Superintendent Kerlatec said the alleged victims had expressed their relief over Father F's arrest.

"I think it was a sense of relief in respect that police were able to firstly listen to what they had to say, investigate the allegations they've raised and take the matter to some point of finality," he said.

"I do stress the matter is before the courts, so the matter is not final."

He said police were also investigating allegations of a cover-up.

"It's certainly early days in regards to (any alleged cover-up)," he said.
